ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE - 4 YEARS

Instruction in English focuses on reading, analyzing through discussion, and writing about a four-year sequence of “Great Books” taken primarily from the Western canon (and including literature in translation), ranging from the Classical (Homer), to the classic (Shakespeare), to the contemporary. Work on vocabulary and grammar is designed to enhance the range of student comprehension and expression, pushing students to gain fluency and precision in both verbal and written use of the language. Daily reading assignments from essays, poems, short stories, novels, and plays make up the bulk of the work, with a strong emphasis being placed on writing - in particular journal keeping and the process of creating critical essays in response to the texts. Oral presentations explore the use of classical rhetoric in argumentation and debate. The English department also holds special, after school SAT preparation courses for juniors and first trimester seniors.
